Today the demand for print has been radically shaped by email and online communications. In recent years Empress Litho have seen an expansion in demand for luxury and retail packaging as e-commerce has increased. What once would have been printed overseas has been reshored, post Brexit. Before the pandemic, less than 5% of the company's production was packaging it is now nearer 30% and that figure is expected to grow. Over half of Empress's staff members have been with the company for more than fifteen years, and they try to process 2.5 million sheets a month. Lithographic printing uses plates to transfer ink, whereas digital printing typically uses toner powder jetted on to the medium in a press that is like a huge office printer. Empress's machinery, inclduing huge Heidelberg lithographic presses and also digital machines, can handle a wide range of projects, from 100 copies of a hardback book to 140,000 copies of an exhibition guide.
