From foundries, tanneries, sawmills, potteries, textile mills, dye houses and shipyards to laboratories, distilleries and state of the art engineering factories, Carmel has travelled the country documenting every kind of manufacturer. Her photographs are natural and not staged, revealing an authentic depiction of the workspace. They show the precision of skilled hands alongside intricate machinery, the dedicated teams that keep these businesses going and the textures and atmospheres of the workspaces themselves.
Carmel has collaborated for many years with Mark Brearley, Professor of Urbanism at London Metropolitan University and proprietor of long established London manufacturer Kaymet trays. Together they have worked on 'visual audits of industry' for councils including Southwark and Kortrijk in Belgium. They have published two books Made in London and Made in Gloucester, going behind the scenes of sixty workshops and factories still operating in the heart of our cities.
Carmel is an award winning photographer and regularly shoots for The Times, the Wellcome Collection and The King's Foundation.
Made in Gloucester goes behind the scenes of ten manufacturers based in this city, known for its industrial past. From Magnum ice creams at Walls and vats of Olbas Oil at Lanes Health, to landing systems at Safran and glass eels caught on the River Severn - this book illustrates that modern British cities still host a vast array of skills and manufacturing.
